SCOUT este un joc de tip „ladder-climbing” în care cărțile au două valori posibile, jucătorii nu își pot rearanja mâna de cărți, iar aceștia pot pasa pentru a lua o carte din setul curent cel mai puternic aflat în joc.
Mai exact, cărțile au valori duble, fiecare jumătate a cărții având un număr diferit, iar cele 45 de cărți conțin toate combinațiile posibile ale numerelor de la 1 la 10. În timpul pregătirii, jucătorul care amestecă trebuie să randomizeze atât ordinea cărților, cât și orientarea acestora. După ce fiecare jucător își primește întreaga mână, o ridică fără a modifica ordinea cărților; dacă dorește, poate roti întreaga mână pentru a folosi valorile de pe cealaltă parte a cărților, dar nu are voie să schimbe ordinea acestora.
